We made a stained glass sidewalk chalk art and think you should too! (Great homeschool activity.)

Hi friends! Have you seen stained glass sidewalk chalk art? It’s totally trending! Chalk art that resembles stained glass looks amazing on sidewalks. Stained glass chalk art is colorful and eye-catching. The pops of color bring joy to communities, and can brighten a passerby’s day. Creating it is a great activity for parents and their children to do together. You don’t need chalk paint to achieve the stained glass look. You can do this one the sidewalk or on an outdoor fence. #chalkart

Make beautiful stained glass sidewalk chalk art that looks like a painted mural using regular outdoor paint, painter's tape, a paintbrush, and water. From st...

What you will need is:

  • washable outdoor chalk

  • a paint brush and some water

  • any type of masking tape ( We used painter’s tape (only because that was the only suitable tape we had at home.)

  • a scissor (to cut the tape)

Start with the design

Using your tape, create different shapes and designs. Imagine different pieces of stained glass on a window. Your child can help with the taping. This is also a fun group activity, but be sure to mask up and maintain social distance during as COVID-19 remains a national emergency and pandemic.

After you’re done laying down the tape and creating beautiful squares, triangles, rhomboids, rectangles, and other shapes, it’s time to color in the shapes. This activity is great because children can count and mentally sort the shapes (math), name the colors, produce art, and work out their arm muscles!

If you’re using outdoor chalk, use a good amount of pressure in applying the chalk colors. When the shape is completely filled, dip the painting brush into water. Tap the brush so the water no longer drips. “Paint” over the shapes to create a beautiful painted-on stained glass effect!

Since this was the first time Phil and I made a stained glass sidewalk chalk art (and I think we did a decent job!), it took us about 40 minutes to complete. We took some breaks in between, to smell Seattle’s spring air and just enjoy the warming weather.

The heart in the middle of our stained glass chalk art design represents the big hearts, souls, and dedication of our essential workers and frontline staff. It also represents the love we feel now, as we’re able to #stayhome with each other. It’s a time I know I will treasure.

Friends, will you try to create stained glass sidewalk chalk art with your little ones? I’d love to see your creations!

We also made a fun and creative obstacle course on our sidewalk using chalk. You can easily add outdoor gross motor activities to your day by making a fun chalk obstacle course! You can add a hopscotch grid, a “fire pit” or “lava” to jump over, a “bridge” so your child can work on walking one foot in front of the other (balance), and a stomping ground with “spiders” or tomatoes… or whatever it is your child would like to stomp on!
