We made trendy Dalgona coffee and Dalgona Matcha so you don't have to. (You really don't have to!) Plant-based iced and hot dalgona coffee, dalgona matcha, dalgona mocha home recipes

Hi friends! We #stayhome and made the trendy TikTok viral Korean frothy coffee, Dalgona coffee, using plant-based oat milk from Oatly. We tried using our Vitamix, and then a milk foamer, and then hand mixing to achieve soft peaks with our dalgona coffee. Ideally you want medium to stiff peaks of dalgona coffee foam.

Friends come make this viral, trendy iced plant-based dalgona latte and warm dalgona oat milk latte with me! First I used the Vitamix and then switched to ha...

Ingredients needed for vegan Dalgona Coffee

☞ [Dalgona Latte Ingredients]

  • 2 tbsp instant coffee

  • 2 tbsp of sugar

  • 2 tbsp of hot water (water must be hot!)

  • 1 cup of (any) milk (we prefer plant-based oat, coconut, soy, rice, flax, cashew, or almond. Regular milk is ok too.)

☞ [Dalgona Latte Instructions]

  1. Boil water. Mix two tablespoons of hot water with two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of instant coffee. (Instant coffee : water : sugar = 1 : 1 : 1 ratio used )

  2. To froth the mixture into soft-medium peak foam, whip the mixture using a stand mixer, a blender like Vitamix, or a milk foamer, or purely by hand. Some people use just a teaspoon. Manually frothing and whipping will take a long time, and you may develop wrist and hand soreness, and even carpal tunnel! In hindsight, I would have left the mixture on high speed in my Vitamix until the mixture became frothy foam. Mix, whip or blend for a longer period of time to achieve stiff peaks of dalgona coffee foam.

  3. When you get soft to medium, or medium to stiff peaks of dalgona coffee foam, add spoonfuls into a cup of (any) milk. You can pre-warm the milk if you want hot dalgona latte, or place the milk into a cup of ice if you want iced dalgona coffee or latte.

Is Dalgona coffee worth the hassle?

We’re not sure we’ll make dalgona coffee again using the manual hand mixing/whipping method. Manual frothing the instant coffee/water/sugar mixture into foam took a lot of time and effort. Some people say you will whip it for 400 times; it’s more like a 1000 times for me. The dalgona coffee drink is quite sugary too— for every tablespoon of instant coffee you’re using, you’re also using a tablespoon of pure sugar. We don’t add sugar to our coffee, normally, so dalgona coffee is a tad too sweet for our taste. (In terms of taste, it also reminds me of Vietnamese or French coffee.)

If you’re lazy but want to try something similar to dalgona coffee, place a few scoops of coffee-flavored ice cream into black coffee to make an affogato. It’s creamy in consistency and sweet like dalgona coffee.

As for Dalgona Matcha, there are a few ways you can make it. You can use egg white or heavy cream or coconut cream/milk. I’ve also used frothy oat milk to make a foamy version of Dalgona Matcha (it’s more like a cappuccino or latte). The standout ingredient in Dalgona Matcha is ceremonial-grade matcha (not culinary matcha.) Ceremonial matcha is richly and vibrantly verdant, and it is packed full of umami (amazing, addicting flavor). It’s also way more expensive than culinary matcha, which is usually a grayer-darker green.

Let’s say you mix 1/4 cup of coconut cream or 1/4 cup of heavy cream or 1 egg white. You’ll use 1 teaspoon of ceremonial matcha (mixed with about 1 tablespoon of water to form a liquid paste).

I’ve also added Dalgona Matcha to a glass of young barley grass drink (mixed with coconut milk or any milk or even water). Young barley grass is packed with nutrients and people in Japan love to drink young barley grass drink. It’s like a power greens drink, or a vegetable juice.

To make Dalgona mocha, first make the dalgona coffee foam. When you get soft peaks, you can add in a teaspoon of cocoa powder. Blend or mix a teaspoon (or more) of cocoa powder with a cup of (any) milk. To make the drink cloudy and dreamy, alternate pouring (any) milk and cocoa milk into your glass.
